Dandruff is one of the most common chronic scalp infections that flakes the skin of the scalp. Dandruff isn't a serious or contagious condition but can be very irritating and very difficult to cure. Globally, Dandruff affects up to 50% of adults. Its peak of severity is usually around the age of 20 and becomes less common above 50 years. Generally, more men have dandruff than women. Symptoms of Dandruff Basically, for teens and adults, symptoms of dandruff are easily spotted: white, oily dead skins that look like dots on your hair, and sometimes, a scaly, itchy scalp. Conditions of dandruff become worse during winter and fall. Causes of Dandruff Several conditions can cause Dandruff, they include: Oily, irritated skin: The condition is one of the most common causes of dandruff.  The skin becomes red and greasy with yellow or white scales. Not enough shampooing: Failure to regularly wash your hair can make the skin cells in your scalp develop, resulting in dandruff. Reaction to hair care products: In some cases, sensitivity to some kind of hair dyes or hair creams can cause an itchy, scaly scalp.  Risk factors for Dandruff Anyone can have dandruff, but certain factors trigger its occurrence, they include:   Age: Dandruff is more prevalent among young adults and middle age group. However, it doesn't mean older adults are left out. Some people experience the infection for a lifetime. Sex: Most cases of dandruff are usually in males. Researchers say that the male hormone may be responsible. Certain illness: For unclear reasons, someone with neurological diseases like Parkinson's disease has a higher risk of developing Dandruff. The same also goes with people infected with HIV.  Treatment of Dandruff Often times, dandruff can be managed, although the treatment requires some trial and error. Generally, using shampoo to reduce the oiliness and skin cell development can play a huge role in treating mild dandruff. If regular shampoo isn't working on your dandruff, dandruff shampoos should be your next option. While different types of dandruff shampoo are available in store, you may need to test it out to see which one works best for you. What you should include in your diet and what you shouldn't? Step down your sugar consumption: A diet that increases sugar level can step up the blood sugar level which worsens dandruff.  Take plenty of garlic: Garlic contains some antifungal properties which fight dandruff Eat foods rich in Vitamin B: Always eat foods rich in vitamin B.
