Ever felt a pain in your shoulder joint when you move? Does the shoulder joint stiffen whenever you try to rotate it? That could be a condition known as frozen shoulder. Frozen shoulder is  characterized by pain and stiffness of the shoulder joints. According to WHO, frozen shoulder is prevalent among adults between the ages of 40 to 70 years. Studies further conclude that about 3% of the world population will experience "adhesive capsulitis (medical term for frozen shoulder)" at least once in their lifetime. The risk of developing frozen shoulder is higher in diabetic patients or those who have just recovered from conditions that prevented the movement of the arm, for example, a mastectomy or a stroke. For some, the pain may become worse at night or during cold weather, while others may not feel any exceptional pain. 2 Strengthening And Stretching Exercises For A Frozen Shoulder Stretching exercises is one of the effective ways to treat frozen shoulder. Make sure your shoulder is warmed up before performing any of the following exercises. You can achieve that by taking a warm 5-10 minutes shower. Remember, only stretch to the level of tension and not pain. Pendulum stretch First, while standing, rest one hand on a table and freely relax the affected shoulder (the other hand). Swing the affected arm in a circle. Perform up to 10 revolutions in a day. Towel stretch Hold one end of a towel around the waist region of your back, hold the other edge with the other hand. Now, stretch your hands outwards to hold the towel horizontally. Maintain this position for a couple of minutes.
