7 Reasons Why Starving Yourself to Lose Weight is A Bad Idea

Every single person around will always have a unique tip and advice for you, that they just have to share with you. One of the common things that come up in conversation are things like – “if you want to lose weight – you should avoid meals.”  And it might also seem logical to restrict the calorie intake or skip meals as a way to cut back on excess calories because you have always been told that – in order to lose weight quickly, you need to reduce your caloric intake. Skipping meals also commonly known as “Intermittent Fasting” can affect your body, but only in a bad way.

  1. Eating Disorder: A study conducted the International Journal of Obesity in 2018 found that – stress can add to the hunger levels, which can result in overeating and binge eating. Skipping meals can increase the stress levels of your body resulting in your desire to eat more food.
  1. Bad Idea for Diabetes Patient: Your average body produces insulin which helps to balance glucose levels in the bloodstream. People who are suffering from diabetes need to balance their insulin and glucose with consuming regular meals three times-day. So, it becomes a very bad idea for a diabetic person to skip meals as it will ruin the body’s rhythm and it will also affect your glucose and insulin levels. And, when these levels go down, the person can suffer from a diabetic stroke.
  1. Increase in Blood Sugar: Breakfast is supposed to be your most essential meal of the day. Because, if you skip your breakfast, you will tend to eat more at the next meal. As you skip a meal, your blood sugar levels go down as the carbohydrates and calories are quickly burned by the body to convert them to sugar – using it as an energy source. Whenever you chomp on large amounts of food after skipping the previous one, it will cause a spike in blood sugar levels and the body will have to work extra to convert the calorie intake into sugar. Usually, this spike in blood sugar levels will lead you to feel sleepy, drowsy, or it may contribute to high blood pressure.
  1. Low Blood Sugar: As stated before, the low level of glucose and sugar are the bad effects of skipping meals. Anyone who tends to skip meals will be low on energy, suffer from headaches, nausea or may even experience hypoglycemia. This can lead to seizures, unconsciousness or at worse, brain damage or death.
  1. High Blood Pressure: The drop in blood sugar levels will likely make your body release hormones to compensate for the low glucose levels, which usually results in an increase in blood pressure. High blood pressure can end up forming blood clots in the arteries leading to your brain, which eventually blocks the blood flow causing a stroke.
  1. Low-Performance Levels: Food is the most important fuel, your body needs it to function properly. If skipping meals, is making you feel hungry – it’s a sign that your body needs fuel to function. Several studies have shown that not having enough energy throughout the day can lead to temporary depression, fatigue, and low energy.
  1. Acid Reflux and Stomach Pain: Your stomach will continue to produce digestive juices even if you skip your meal. Ignoring your meals for long periods can lead to stomach acid, gastritis, and acid reflux. If your body exceeds storing these fuels it can lead to severe ulcers and sometimes even cancer.

Your body’s metabolism needs to function properly in order for you to lose weight. Skipping meals doesn’t appear to be an effective weight-loss strategy as it causes an imbalance to your metabolism. Consuming balanced meals with healthy snacks, like fruits and vegetables could be a great way out but, over obsessing over cutting down your calorie intake will never be an effective way.
