Spotting the first grey hair is often a turning point in our lives. It reminds us of our fleeting youth and approaching age. However, these days, people as young as 25 have been suffering from premature greying.  You may resort to plucking out the first few, but they always grow back with vengeance. There are two effective ways to battle the greys. First, you colour them or second, you delay their appearance. Although hair colouring is the more popular method, a holistic way to stop premature greying is by making a few tweaks in your lifestyle. If your greys have been giving you sleepless nights, here’s what you need to know.

How Hair Turns Grey

The human hair colour can be black, brown, blonde or red, depending upon the quantity of melanin in the hair follicles. As we age, the follicles generate less melanin, making the hair colour look lighter than before.

Some factors that cause greying of hair is not in our control, like aging (of course), genetics, medical condition and stressors. But some causes are a result of our own negligence, which can be fixed. In this article, let’s discuss ways to delay hair greying.

1. Fix Nutritional Deficiencies

A bad diet as one of the most preventable factors that cause greying. One of the most common causes or premature greying is nutritional deficiency. If your diet lacks in vitamin  B-6, biotin, iron, vitamin D or vitamin E, you could start seeing a few greys cropping up.

Eating a diet rich in these nutrients can also fix your greying, according to a 2015 study in the journal development. It states that your hair can go back to its natural colouring if you plug your nutritional deficiencies.

2. Stop Smoking

We know. You don’t need another article telling you why smoking is bad. But facts are facts. A 2013 study in the Italian Dermatology Online Journal shows that smokers are two-and-a-half times more likely to suffer from premature greying. Another 2015 study in the Journal of American Academy of Dermatology also showed that greying is young men is linked to their smoking habits.

3. Stop Using Chemicals in Your Hair

Ironically, many of the hair dyes in the market used for covering grey hair could be causing it in the first place. Some may contain substances that can interfere with melanin production of the follicle. Chemicals in these products, like peroxide, can strip the hair of its natural colouring, making them look bleached in the process. If you really want to cover your greys, opt for natural hair dyes like henna.

4. Drink Your Green Tea!

If that carton of green tea has been staring at you from the shelf, gathering dust, put it out of its misery. Drink a cup of two every day if you don’t want any more greys. Green tea is full of antioxidants that can fight free radical damage. And as we already know, free radicals in the body can cause premature aging. Reduce oxidative stress but getting a good dose of antioxidants pumped into your body. And it need not be just green tea. Have foods that are rich in the nutrient like berries, fish and vegetables. Indian gooseberry or awla is one of the most ubiquitous home remedies for hair problems, including greying. Eat one or two every day for a good dose of healthy antioxidants.

5. Eat Curry Leaves

If you have the habit of discarding curry leaves from your food, allow us to make a case for it. Curry leaves are nutritionally dense ingredients that will do a world of good to your body, including your hair. Chockfull of iron, calcium, vitamin C and phosphorous, curry leaves can plug nutritional deficiencies that may cause premature greying.

If you are still not open to the idea of eating it, no worries. You can always add a few to your hair oil. A report in the International Journal of PharmTech ResearchI discusses the traditional practice of applying curry-leaf enriched oil for hair to prevent greying.

6. Yoga

Believe it or not, but yogasanas are known to counter premature greying. Many asanas improve blood circulation to your scalp or head. These can actually revive sluggish hair follicles, prompting them to make melanin and delay hair aging. Try asanas like Ustrasana, Trikonasana, Apanasana and Adho Mukha Savasana under the guidance of a trained instructor to fight premature greying.

So these are a few tips you can use to delay hair aging. However, we’d like to add that a few greys here and there is no cause for worry. Some think of grey hair as a sign of maturity and wisdom. If you love your silver mane, there’s no reason why someone should tell you otherwise.
