It is true that the face is in the reflection of our mind and the number of all expressions that our face can make is up to 10,000! Our face has at least 40 muscles and out of them, 21 are related to expressing our emotions. So as we constantly engage our facial muscles into either expression or showing the emotions, we are constantly putting them to hard work!
Did you know that it takes 43 muscles to make a single frown but 17 muscles to make a single smile? So when the other parts of our body are stressed, our facial muscles also absorb and store stress. They become tight and the blood circulation is constricted. If we relaxed our face and facial muscles, not only will it improve circulation and relieve stress, it would also affect the rest of our body.
But will this form of meditation give me instant results? Well, that’s like going to Zumba class and asking your instructor if you will lose 10 pounds in a single session!! Practice makes it better and shows results!
What are the benefits of facial meditation and what are the three unusual benefits
- Stronger immunity
When we are stressed, our face shows it. Our skin shows acne breakouts, fine lines, wrinkles and sagging due to inflammation which is a response of a weakened immune system. With facial meditation, mindfulness is increased and our immune system is stronger so that our skin is healthier, supple and the circulation is better.
- Healthier decisions
How does facial meditation help your decision-making abilities? Well, because of mindfulness we are more aware of our emotions which are centered and make us calmer. We are more focused and our concentration improves manifold. We are less stressed and our approach towards life is more positive. So we tend to gravitate towards a healthy lifestyle — choosing healthier foods, less sedentary and more active life and a better exercise routine.
- Reverse aging with self-confidence
When you engage in facial meditation, your mind (which is overwhelmed or overstressed) can relax and we can get a good night’s sleep– the beauty sleep which is very essential for proper rejuvenation of our mind. When you are sleepless or sleep for fewer hours than needed, it takes a toll on your face and you look years older than your actual age. Facial meditation controls the cortisol spikes and calms the body to sleep better, and you tend to look younger! Isn’t that cool?
How to do facial meditation?
One of the easiest ways is to have a few minutes to start with; maybe five minutes a day and you can choose a nook that is comfortable either in your home or office to sit and start your meditation.
- Basically, just breathe in and out.
- Inhale for five seconds filling up air in your chest cavity. Exhale for five seconds fully removing the air.
- Repeat for 10 to 15 times.
- Then try to do Anulom Vilom – a pranayama technique in which using your index finger to close your left nostril and inhale through the right then close the right nostril and exhale through the left releasing the finger there. Repeat on the other side and alternate for 5 to 6 times.
- Repeat both the steps for five minutes in total.
You can chant or say an affirmation or keep quiet.
In just five minutes a day, you will be calmer. What is more? In a few days, you will regain that renewed energy! Are you incorporating any kind of meditation practice in your daily life? Please take a moment to comment below your thoughts.
